Craig Gordon has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 43, closing the door on one of the most respected goalkeeping careers in Scottish football.

The Hearts and Scotland goalkeeper ends a 25-year journey that included 682 club appearances, 84 international caps and spells with Heart of Midlothian, Cowdenbeath, Sunderland and Celtic. His final chapter also carried a special emotional note: Gordon was part of Scotland’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even though he did not play in the tournament.

A career built on resilience

Gordon’s story is not only about longevity, but also about recovery. After coming through the Hearts academy, he became one of the country’s best young goalkeepers and earned a move to Sunderland in 2007 for a then-record British fee for a goalkeeper. Injuries later threatened to end his career early, but Gordon returned to top-level football with Celtic in 2014 and rebuilt his reputation in impressive fashion.

At Celtic, he won major honours and became a reliable figure during a dominant domestic period. He later returned to Hearts, the club most closely connected with his name, and remained part of the Scottish game deep into his forties.

More than just numbers

The statistics are strong, but they do not fully explain Gordon’s standing. For Scotland fans, he represented professionalism, patience and refusal to quit. For Hearts supporters, he was one of their own: a goalkeeper who left, succeeded elsewhere, and came back to finish his career at Tynecastle.
